Developments in electronic publishing that are alternatives to the traditional system.
Those involved in developments in e-publishing commonly use terms such as “Free online scholarship” and “Open access to research information”.
The starting point of it all is - a belief that the traditional system for scholarly publishing is failing the academic and research community.
So what is wrong with the present system?
High costs and restrictive policies result in limited access to research information. Plus there is a perception that publishers give a poor service - they supply little added value, and publication is very slow.
