Notes:
A paper from SPARC - The Case for Institutional Repositories: A SPARC Position Paper - asserts that institutional repositories are a natural extension of an academic institution's role as a generator of primary research, and anticipates that such repositories will be critical components in the evolving structure of scholarly communication.
Massachussetts Institute for Technology has created DSpace – a digital repository created to capture, distribute and preserve the intellectual output of MIT. Their press release (3 August) stated that these archives may provide more efficient open access to research than the commercial journals.
In the UK there are institutional archives at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Nottingham, developed as pilots. (Mention the Stephen Pinfield Ariadne article.)
One of the strands of the JISC FAIR programme is actively promoting e-archives : the principal projects in this area are SHERPA, e-prints UK, TARDIS and ROMEO.
