Now more than 80 online, peer reviewed journals in biology and medicine: the journals are available by subscription but the commitment to free availability of original research means that the research articles are deposited in PubMed Central and can be accessed by non-subscribers.
Has committed itself to maintaining an open access publishing policy through the launch of an Open Access Charter (July 2002). “Retrospectively and prospectively, in all eventualities, including any future changes in ownership.”
Author charges from Jan 1st 2002. For publication of a paper, there is a standard charge of $500, which BioMed Central says should be met from funding councils and research awards.
