HighWire Press began in early 1995 with the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC)
Now (November 2002) has 342 journals contributing free full text articles, including Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In November 2001 there were approx 100 journals
Conclude that journals are increasingly making content available, but there are too many different models being applied – current issue only, or free after 6 months, or 12 months, and a variety of repositories
Current policy at Science is that full text of all Research Articles and Reports become available free of charge 12 months after the publication date
Other journals may provide some free access via their own sites -
Institute of Physics – recent announcement that the full-text each article will now be freely available in for a period of 30 days from online publication, irrespective of the frequency of the journal. (Formerly allowed free access to issues while current.) “The aim is to underline our commitment to disseminate new research as widely as possible.”
